Careers in Mechanical Design & Engineering

The Jesse vest is the perfect pattern for a classic sherpa-lined vest. Sherpa Design is a dynamic and growing MCAD services company located in beautiful Portland Oregon. The company was founded in 2001 and since then we have been expanding our capabilities and continuing to work with new and exciting clients.

Switzerland-based spherene has developed a metamaterial based on inverse spheres, or spherenes. The company…

Sherpa fleece has become a cold-weather classic for good reasons. From blankets to shoe linings, jackets to even sweatpants, this fabric will leave you warm, cozy, and ready to embrace the cold winter days. Dare I say; you might even look forward to those low temps that allow you to wear this delightfully soft and snuggly fabric. If you're making a pullover, vest, or any other fleece item with curved seams, be sure to staystitch your pattern pieces as soon as you cut them.

You Deserve a Well Designed Home, Don't You?

If your sherpa fleece is made out of cotton or a cotton blend, prewash your fabric. Cotton is prone to shrinking under high temperatures when washing and drying. Named after the wool-lined clothing worn by the Sherpa people of Nepal, sherpa is also frequently called faux-shearling because of its sheep-like resemblance. It was designed to resemble shearling—the skin and fur of a lamb—and introduced as an eco-friendly and cheaper alternative to animal fur and wool.

In just a few weeks, you’ll have a solid model of how your product would need to look and function, along with a map of investments and risks. For our clients, this breadth of expertise means stronger engineering solutions, simplified purchasing, and full lifecycle support. If you're building or remodeling, know that I've been there and I feel you.

Our team is made up of a group of mechanical designers that like to push the CAD systems in our daily design work. We get excited when we find a better way of doing things in 3D and are encouraged to share our knowledge gains with the group every week in the Tuesday morning staff meeting. No matter where you are in the product development lifecycle, you can partner with us for the exact services you need and benefit from the broad range of expertise on our team. Everyone on our team of engineers, designers, and machinists thrives on finding better ways to solve complex problems. We find that multiple perspectives often amount to a clearer view of what’s possible.

If you aren’t familiar, nap refers to how the fibers stand up on the fabric's surface. These fibers should all face in one direction–when you run your hand across the napped fabric, it will feel soft in one direction and look and feel different in another. You’ll want to lay out all of your pattern pieces so that they face the same direction on the nap. If you ignore the nap, you risk sewing two pieces together that, while cut from the same fabric, appear to be slightly different. Our on-site machine shop helps our engineers optimize designs for manufacturability. Because we push the limits of NX CAD/CAM in our work every single day, our trainers bring current, real-world experience to your team.

Product definition

"Finding flex space in the greater Portland area that can accommodate both office and light manufacturing has proven to be a challenge," noted Patrick Barrett, Owner and CEO of Sherpa Design. When your company discovers an opportunity for a new product in the market, you need to understand what it will take to pursue it. The key is to reach that understanding fast, before a competitor could make your move. We can get you there with a product validation sprint.

How to Pick a Sherpa Project

You’ve sewed up your sherpa garment and worn it a few times. Now it’s time to clean it—so what is the best way to clean sherpa? There are some important considerations to consider when washing and drying sherpa garments that will benefit the rest of your laundry as well—remember, this fabric can shed. You may want to consider handwashing your sherpa garment to try and avoid any laundry mishaps. However, with a few precautions, sherpa can be machine washed.

Unfortunately, for rotary cutter fans, a rotary cutter may not be accurate due to the unstable nature of the fuzzy fabric pile. We partner with forward-thinking companies to explore new product possibilities, then guide them from concept sketch to first article and beyond. Whether we take on the full project or a specific portion, you can rely on us for the creative vision, technical depth, and agile M.O. From early-stage concepts to initial production runs and sustaining support, you can partner with us on the exact challenge you’re facing and benefit from the experience of our entire team.

As the first global design partner with Carbon, we seamlessly move from engineering to 3D printed parts. And with a team of exceptional engineers and machinists in-house, we leverage our manufacturing equipment for FAI, reverse engineering, and NX CAM post-processor development. The Skipper sweatshirt will make a cozy, easy-to-sew sherpa garment.

Flip the cards below to see our team members’ recent explorations within their domains of expertise and outside the office. We asked a few of our team members for their perspective on the work and culture at Sherpa. In this stage, collaboration and delivery are closely intertwined. We draw on our team’s multidisciplinary expertise to explore your product’s potential from all perspectives, then create models and prototypes for us to review and test together. Based on our insights and your feedback, we refine them through dynamic iteration that keeps your product on track toward market launch as its best possible version. Built on our core expertise of product engineering, our platform of capabilities makes your teams and projects the best they can be.

My approach is to connect, collaborate, and facilitate shared process to advance your goals. Experts add insights directly into each article, started with the help of AI. My mission is to inspire others to reconnect with nature through art and design. What is sherpa and how to order Sherpa from the right sherpa fabric suppliers?

Consider using a ribbed knit fabric for the neckband, waistband, and wrist cuffs, as it will decrease bulk and make a nice design feature. Sherpa fleece has a thick pile that you want to avoid crushing or matting. The iron's heat will smush the fluffy pile and may even melt the fabric if it’s a synthetic or synthetic blend.
